The Holiday Season, a note from Deborah Kahn
Dear Families,
We have so many fun and meaningful traditions for the holiday season at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Rockville. Please participate in the following and enjoy the fellowship and outreach of our community.
Saturday, Nov. 22 – ALL AGES POTLUCKS ARE BACK! The Religious Education Committee is happy to sponsor the return of the popular All Ages Potlucks beginning Nov. 22nd at 5:30 p.m. in Founders Hall. Good food, conversation, games, and deepening relationships with all ages.
Sunday, Nov. 23 – Our intergenerational Thanksgiving worship service includes a food collection for All Souls UU annual Thanksgiving food drive (some families and individuals deliver the food to All Souls in D.C. after the service), handing out Guest At Your Table boxes, the annual Unitarian Universalist Service Committee collection, and bread communion. This year, Nov. 23, is also one of our Bring A Friend Sundays. Extend your invitations to your friends now so they can get the 23rd on their calendars and participate in this celebratory service. (Beacon House “gift tree” begins Nov. 30, a chance to share.)
Sunday, Dec. 7 – The beginning of the worship service includes Mitten Tree, our annual collection of mittens, hats, scarves, gloves for the Montgomery county Interfaith Clothing Store and for Beacon House. After church All Ages Potluck and Getting Ready for the Holidays, a most fun seasonal event sponsored by the Religious Education Committee. Make ornaments to take home and to decorate the tree in Founders Hall. Listen to (or participate in) UUCR’s Holiday Band. A family favorite! New families especially welcome.
Wednesday, Dec. 10, 7:30 pm-8:30 pm (special earlier ending time to support family participation) – “Reshaping Holidays” – Share and learn about other UU family and individual holiday traditions, consider ways of reshaping your celebrations for “increased compassionate energies,” and learn about the humanist celebration, HumanLight.
Sunday, Dec. 14 – The Holiday pageant presented during the worship service.
Wednesday, Dec. 17, 6:30pm-8:00 pm (earlier start and ending times to support family participation), Caroling in the Neighborhood – Gather in Founders Hall before singing carols in the UUCR neighborhood. Return to church for hot cocoa, cider, and cookies. Maggie Raftery, choir member, will keep us in tune.
Sunday, Dec. 21, 5:30-7:30pm Hanukkah & Solstice Celebrations - The first night of Hanukkah and the Winter Solstice are the same evening this year; we will celebrate both! All Ages Potluck, 5:30-6:30 pm in Founders Hall will focus on Hanukkah with latkes, the Hanukkah story, and blessings. If you have menorahs, you are invited to bring them. At 6:30 we process to the sanctuary for UUCR’s annual Winter Solstice celebration, a lovely ritual and celebration for the darkest time of the year.
Dec. 21 Morning worship service is one of our Bring A Friend Sundays.
Wednesday, Dec. 24, Christmas Eve - Two Candlelight services, 4:00 pm and 8:00 pm.
If you’ve already bought your 2009 calendar, put on it Sat., Jan. 31, 5:30pm-8:00pm, All Ages Potluck and Lunar New Year Celebration, and Sat., Feb. 7 5-8pm, Junior High Boston Dinner Fundraiser.
If you have questions about any events, please contact me by email, or 301-762-7666.
Blessings,
Deborah Kahn, Director of Religious Education
