EMERSON soccer squads earn national academic recognition
Emerson College is one of only 65 colleges nationwide to have both its men’s and women’s soccer teams named winners of the 2007-2008 National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award. To qualify for the award, which encompasses all three NCAA Divisions, a team must earn a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. There were 110 men’s teams and 265 women’s teams that met the requirements for the honor.
Emerson and Lesley University were the only two Massachusetts colleges on the double award winners list, and the two schools were the only two Division III institutions in New England to make the list. Other New England schools that had both teams qualify were Dartmouth College, the University of Maine, the University of New Hampshire, the University of Vermont, Quinnipiac University, and St. Michael’s College.
Emerson’s women qualified with a 3.47 GPA which was the highest of any of the 27 New England colleges on the list. 265 women’s teams nation-wide qualified for the honor.
On the men’s list, Emerson’s 3.33 GPA was good for third in the New England Region. Only Amherst College (3.48) and Dartmouth College (3.34) had higher aggregate grade point averages in the men’s rankings.

Athletics at Emerson are an opportunity for students to bring out their best through competition. Student-athletes learn valuable lessons about teamwork, responsibility, and dedication that will positively affect their lives - both on and off the playing field.
The role of Athletics at the College is a significant one, however, the Emerson coaching staff knows the primary reason student-athletes attend Emerson is to obtain the finest education possible in the fields of communication and the performing arts. The Lions’ philosophy expects that student-athletes give 100% both in the classroom and on the playing fields. Maintaining this balance between academics and athletics is a challenge that teaches commitment and self-discipline.
